Mid-Symposium Excursions

All the scheduled excursions will be accompanied by a leader, co-leaders, and by experts in the territory.

There will be several one-day mid-symposium excursions  such as Sierra de Guadarrama National Park, Montejo de la Sierra beech forests, Somosierra birch forests, El Lobo Peak high mountain area, El Escorial mid-mountain area, El Tiemblo ancient chestnut forest, central Spain inland gypsum and saline habitats, and limestone landscapes south of Madrid.

Montejo de la Sierra relic beech forests (1550 m asl): easy full day hiking to visit the relic beech forests (Fagus sylvatica) and surrounding areas at northeastern Madrid Region.

El Lobo Peak high mountain area (2274 m asl): easy-moderate full day hiking in the Ayllón Range (eastern part of the Iberian Central System). Stop in Riaza and El Paular Valley.

Somosierra birch forests (1470 m asl): easy full day hiking to visit the relic birch forests (Betula celtiberica) and surrounding areas at northeast Madrid Region.

Sierra de Guadarrama National Park: easy-moderate full day high-mountain hiking, from Puerto de Cotos (Cotos Pass, 1830 m asl) to Peñalara Peak (2428 m asl).

Valsaín Mountain Iberian Scott pine forests (Pinus sylvestris var. iberica) and Guadarrama National Park: easy-moderate full day hiking at northwest of Madrid Region. Stop in La Granja Royal Palace and Segovia.

Guadarrama Range (1050 m asl): easy full day hiking in a mid-mountain area. Stop in El Escorial.

El Tiemblo (1000 m asl) ancient chestnut forest (Castanea sativa): easy full day hiking in the Iruelas Valley Nature Reserve, northwest of Madrid Region. Stop in Ávila.

Central Spain inland gypsum and saline habitats (520 m asl): easy full day excursion. Stop in Aranjuez.

Limestone landscapes south of Madrid (800 m asl): easy full day excursion.

San Vicente Range (1350 m asl.): easy full day excursion south of Madrid Region (Tiétar Valley). Stop in ‘Toros de Guisando’.
